Anchor Bay Great Ships Replicas by Harbour Lights USCGC Mackinaw USCGC Mackinaw WAGB 83, known by her sailors and fans as "Mighty Mack" and "Big Mac" plied the waters of the Great Lakes for 62 years. Commissioned in 1944, she played an important role during World War II keeping the shipping lanes open during the winter months so that iron ore could be transported to the steel producing plants of the region. After the war, she continued these duties so that commerce and manufacturing could flourish in the Lakes region. In warm weather, she performed other Coast Guard duties, such as search and rescue and law enforcement. Since retirement, MACKINAW has served as a museum ship in the City of Mackinaw, and is visited by thousands of interested visitors each year. To preserve her history, and continue her line, the Coast Guard commissioned a new USCGC Mackinaw WLBB-30 upon the decomissioning of "Big Red." The Anchor Bay division of Harbour Lights released two Great Ship Replica limited editions of the USCGC Makinaw. The white hulled version representing an older configurartion of MACKINAW, was comprised of only 500 pieces, and was sold out quickly. This version has been retired by Anchor Bay, and is available only on the secondary market. The red-hull version, pictured below, which was an issue of 4,000 pieces, is still available.
