Artwork featuring the AV-8B Harrier The McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II, also known as the Harrier Jump Jet, is a second generation vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) ground attack aircraft currently used by the United States Marine Corps. Its development was a shining example of US - UK cooperation of Cold War defense achievements. The first variant, known as the "Day Attack" version, was placed in service in 1985. These aircraft have either been upgraded to either of the later variants ("Night Attack" and "Harrier II Plus), or withdrawn from service. The AV-8B Harrier II is a subsonic, single pilot, ground attack aircraft flown from carriers and large amphibious ships in support of USMC ground units. It can carry a wide variety of weapons on its external hard points. As of January 2010, the USMC has 99 AV-8B Harrier II Plus aircraft in operation.
