The S-3 Viking, built by Lockhhed, is a US Navy multi-mission aircraft that was first introduced to fleet use in 1974 as the S-3A. Initially, the mission of the S-3A was anti-submarine warfare. The mission emphasis changed to surface warfare and aerial refueling in the 1990's with the introduction of the S-3B. Sixteen S-3A's were converted to the ES-3A Shadow variant, which was designed for ELINT ops. These aircraft were retired from service in 1999, while the remaining S-3's were earmarked for retirement by 2009 S-3 Viking Profile Drawings by George E.
