The San Antonio Class of Amphibious Transport Dock was designed to replace a variety of older ships, including some LPDs, LSDs, LSTs, and LKAs. This newest class of amphib carries 32% more cargo than its predecessor, the Austin Class. These ships can carry 2 LCACs, 720 troops, 1 or 2 helos, and have a variety of armament for self defense and offensive fire missions, including 2 - 21 cell RAM (rolling airframe missile) launchers, 2 single 30mm Bushmaster Mark 42 cannons, and 2 - 12.7mm Mk26 machine guns. Space and weight are reserved for the installation of a 16 cell Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) vertical launch system. The superstructure incorporates features that reduce each ship's radar profile. George Bieda has skillfully produced profile drawings of these potent new ships. Two drawings are featured below:
The USS New York LPD 21 was launched in March of 2008, and is scheduled to be commissioned and become part of the Navy's arsenal in 2009. It is a very unique ship, in that 24 tons of steel salvaged from the debris of the World Trade Center were used to cast the bow section. It will always hold a special place in the hearts of those who were effected by the horrific events of September 11, 2001. The 5 ships in this class that have been completed are all available through the order form below. Don't pass up the opportunity to add up to 3 lines of personalization to your print at no extra charge to make it truly unique. | ||||||
