God's Own Lunatics

"God's own lunatics," is the phrase coined by noted reporter and co-author of "We Were Soldiers Once, and Young" Joe Galloway.  (The book later became a hit movie starring Mel Gibson.)  Joe bestowed this title as a token of respect and admiration for helicopter crews in Vietnam, and their willingness to go anywhere, anytime, in support of ground forces.  Galloway witnessed this first-hand during the Battle of Ia Drang in 1965.

In his newest print, artist Joe Kline has captured the teamwork, commitment, and devotion to duty required to complete the mission of extracting a Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol under heavy enemy fire.

"Air Cavalry was drawn from an official U.S. Army photograph taken by SSG Howard C. Breedlove in Vietnam April 24, 1967.   The men jumping from the helicopter were from the Rifle Platoon, B Troop, 1st Squadron, 9th Air Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division.  The photograph was taken on a hilltop about three kilometers west of Duc Pho in Quang Ngai Province during Operation Oregon, a search and destroy mission."~Tom Maloney

The Sentinal

Sentinal.jpg (86118 bytes)From another dark time in our nation's past, when we faced a foe just as wicked  as Osama bin Laden or Saddam Hussein.  Acclaimed artist Michael Wooten reminds us that freedom has always prevailed.

"This painting and the poem that accompanies it are based on a photograph that was taken in 1974 of a 2nd Armored Division Sherman tank that met its fate in a field along a road running between Magoster and Beffe, Belgium.  It was a casualty of the 2nd SS-Panzer Division in the Ardenne in January of 1945.  I could not help but wonder about this silent relic that still remained where it had fallen.  Where had it fought prior to being knocked out?  Who were the men that comprised the crew?  What were they like and what was their fate?  This haunting image serves to remind us that, indeed, 'Freedom isn't free.'"
