Steinaker DD/DDR 863! As you all know, USS Steinaker DD 863 was commissioned 26 MAY 1945. She was named after Donald B. Steinaker, a US Marine PFC who was killed on Guadalcanal on 9 OCT 1942, when his unit was attacked during a heavy Japanese offensive. His unit fought furiously against overwhelming odds and inflicted a tremendous toll on the Japanese attacker. PFC Steinaker steadfastly maintained his position and died at his post. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for gallantry in action. In 1952, USS Steinaker under went conversion to a radar picket destroyer, and carried the designation of DDR until she completed her FRAM II upgrade in MAR 1965. She was decommissioned and sold to Mexico in 1982, and has been sighted by many visitors to Mexico through 2005. In conjunction with the 2009 WESTPAC '68 Reunion Committee, which was recently held in Virginia, we have produced a series of profile drawings of the ship. We have a composite drawing, which includes profiles of the ship as she appeared in each of her 3 major configurations, as well as a list of Commanding Officers. This drawing can be ordered with or without the Reunion title. Click on either thumbnail for a larger view, then click your browser's BACK button to return here Our profile drawings are produced by George Bieda, a retired Navy Captain, who served for in the U.S. Navy for 29 years. He calls upon his first-hand experience and an extensive reference collection to produce drawings that are as historically accurate as possible. We also offer his individual profile drawings of USS Steinaker in any of the three time-frames pictured in the montage. Though there may have been minor variations within each period, we are confident that these are correct representations of the ship's appearance. Our motto here at USMilitaryArt.com, however is "Semper Gumby," (Always Flexible), so if you have information that would make our drawings more accurate for specific time periods, we encourage you to pass them along to us. You can do that by emailing us at info@usmilitaryart.com or by including them in the "Comments" section of the order form. At no additional cost, we will add up to 3 lines of personalization on your individual drawing at the time of printing. This typically includes your rank/rate, name, duty station or nickname, and the years you served aboard. If you have any questions about this, give us a call on our toll-free number at 888.465.5389. We would be happy to discuss the possible options with you. You can click on any of the 3 images below to see a larger view, then click your browser's BACK button to return here and complete your order. Don't forget to select your print option, and fill in the "Years Served Aboard" and "Personalization" info to make your drawing truly unique. And last, but certainly not least, we'd like to send out a special "Thank You" to the folks on the 2009 Reunion Committee who aided us in this project by reviewing and commenting on the first drafts of the drawings, providing a correct CO's list for use on the montage drawings, and for displaying the sample drawings at the Reunion! |
