"Cold War Warrior" by Mark Karvon featuring the M60 Main Battle Tank

For over 3 decades, the M60 and its variants were the main battle tank of the US military, used by both the US Army and the US Marine Corps.  Fifteen thousand M60s were built by Chrysler between 1959 and 1983. The design of the M60 MBT was loosely based on the M48 Patton, with numerous improvements, including a 105mm main gun and heavier armor. Upgrades over the years included explosive reactive armor to protect against missile strikes and a firing system with better thermal imaging than the early MI Abrams.

The M60 was the US military's main battle tank during the Cold War. It was used by the US Marines during Operation Urgent Fury, the amphibious assault of Grenada.  The 1991 Gulf War saw the largest deployment of M60s, where the US Marines, equipped with the M60A1, defeated Iraqi armored forces, including the Russian-built T-72 tank.

Retirement of the M-60s from the US military began after Operation Desert Storm, with the last units retired in 1997, replaced by the M1 Abrams MBT. Though modified for speed, maneuverability, firepower and survivability, the M60 remains in service today with militaries in many other countries.

In "Cold War Warrior", a lone M60A3PT is seen patrolling a wintery landscape somewhere in Europe.
