Nuclear Powered Attack Submarines were the backbone of the US Navy's Soviet anti-ballistic missile fleet during the Cold War era, until the advent of the Los Angeles Class.  Many improvements in stealth, electronics, and weaponry were made during this period.

USS Narwhal SSN 671, was Adm Rickover's per project, designed to be the ultra quiet boat. Although built as part of the Sturgeon Class, in the late 1960s, very little of the NARWHAL's design was based on the other boats in the class. She could scoop seawater in through inlets on the rear stabilizer fins and use this as coolant for the natural circulation (rather than pressurized) reactor plant.  This feature, along with the small reactor coolant pumps and a directly coupled turbine made her the quietest submarine of the era. This is all reminiscent of the Russian submarine featured in Tom Clancy's novel "Red October." Many features of NARWHAL's design were incorporated into the Ohio Class of ballistic missile subs.

Each of our profile drawings represents a specific time period in the ship's life. That's why we ask for your "years of interest." Our artist will configure the ship's profile and stats to conform to that time period.  A range of years provides sufficient information, or you can enter "at commissioning" or "at decommissioning."

To make your drawing truly unique, we will add up to 3 lines of personalization to the drawing (25 characters max per line). You can use all three lines, or just one or two, the choice is yours! There is no extra charge for this service! If you have any questions about personalization, check out our suggestions on our "Personalization Tips" page, or phone us at 609-264-5256.

Our profile drawings are printed with high quality commercial giclee equipment on heavy weight, acid-free, archival stock, using inks with lightfastness ratings of 150 years when displayed properly. Each drawing is individually numbered and digitally signed by our artist.
