As reported by Wikipedia's listing for the ship, on 25 OCT 1944, during  The  Battle off Samar. USS Johnston DD 557, a small "tincan" destroyer, armed with nothing larger than <a data-cke-saved-href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5%22/38_caliber_gun" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5%22/38_caliber_gun" style="text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background: none rgb(255, 255, 255); font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px;" title="5" 38="" caliber="" gun"="">5-inch (127 mm) guns and torpedoes, would lead the attack of a handful of light ships which had inadvertently been left unprotected in the path of a massive Japanese fleet led by battleships and cruisers. The actions of Johnston and her little escort carrier task unit "Taffy 3" helped stop Admiral Kurita's Center Force from attacking vulnerable U.S. landing forces, and eventually inflicted greater losses to the Japanese attackers than they suffered.
