USS Los Angeles SSN 688, the first boat of the Los Angeles Class of nuclear powered fast attack submarines  was commissioned. A total of 62 boats of this class were built. For more than half a century, they made up the US Navy's attack submarine fleet. They countered the threat of Soviet ballistic submarines around the globe.

After building 31 boats, the class underwent a design change.  Eight boats were built as Flight II with the addition of 12 vertical launch tubes for firing Tomahawk cruise missiles. The 23 Flight III boats were designed to be quieter, and had advanced sensors and electronics

Each of our profile drawings represents a specific time period in the ship's life. That's why we ask for your "years of interest." Our artist will configure the ship's profile and stats to conform to that time period.  A range of years provides sufficient information, or you can enter "at commissioning" or "at decommissioning."
